Minute By Minute (Ray Fenwick & Polle 'Robby' Eduard)

In april 2002 wordt de CD opnieuw uitgebracht door het engelse label "Angel Air" met een nieuwe layout en een nieuwe titel: "Long Hot Night". De oorspronkelijke opnamen zijn voorzien van een nieuwe, sterk verbeterde, mix en er zijn een viertal bonus tracks aan de CD toegevoegd. Na dertien jaar heeft dit album nog niets aan kracht ingeboet en nummers zoals "Don't Mess With Fire", "Short Avenue" en "Tijuana Holiday" behoren nog steeds tot het live repertoire van Polle.

De eerste demo opnamen voor deze CD stammen uit 1987, toen de band nog "Blue Horizon" zou gaan heten. Later hebben we de naam gewijzigd in "Minute By Minute" om verwarring met het Blue Horizon muzieklabel te voorkomen. Sinds de laatste release van de CD in het midden van de jaren negentig zijn de originele opnamen opnieuw gemixed en zijn de originele demo's aan de CD toegevoegd. Het project was het geesteskind van mijzelf (Ray Fenwick) en Polle Eduard. Polle en ik ontmoetten elkaar voor het eerst in de jaren zestig toen we allebei in de Tee Set speelden. Ik speelde gitaar en Polle was de bassist.
Na een tijdje werden we ontevreden over onze positie in de band en samen met toetsenist / songwriter Hans van Eijck verlieten we de Tee Set om After Tea op te richten. We hadden opnieuw succes in de hitparades, maar op een gegeven moment heb ik de band verlaten om lid te worden van The Spencer Davis Group. Door de jaren heen zijn Polle en ik altijd goede vrienden gebleven, dus toen we besloten om opnieuw samen opnamen te gaan maken gingen we eigenlijk gewoon verder waar we gebleven waren. Omdat we allebei als songwriters gegroeid waren besloten we dat al het materiaal voor de CD van eigen hand moest zijn.
Sinds de onstuimige "Flower Power" dagen met de Tee Set en After Tea is mijn liefde voor Holland alleen maar gegroeid. Ik werk daar nog steeds wanneer ik de kans krijg. Toen het aankwam op het selecteren van de muzikanten voor het album kozen we mensen met wie we eerder hadden samengewerkt of kenden vanwege hun reputatie.
Mijn eerste ontmoeting met Jan Akkerman gebeurde terwijl we op tournee waren in de V.S. in het begin van de zeventiger jaren. Hij was de gitarist in Focus en ik had dezelfde baan bij The Spencer Davis Group. We werden goede vrienden. Jan is een uitmuntende muzikant een een "toffe gozer". Ergens aan het einde van de jaren tachtig kwamen we weer samen toen we deelnamen aan het Forcefield Project. Jan speelde mee op twee van de vier albums van de groep, samen met drummer Cozy Powell en zangers Graham Bonnet en Tony Martin.
Mijn kennismaking met Cozy Powell kwam tot stand via de Deep Purple "Stamboom". Op het moment dat ik lid was van de Ian Gillan Band, was hij de drummer van Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Na onze samenwerking tijdens het Forcefield Project vroeg ik Cozy of hij bereid was om mee te spelen op een aantal Minute By Minute nummers. Hij stemde onmiddelijk in en kwam naar Holland voor de opnamen.
Candy Dulfer werd ons aangeraden door Bobby van den Berg, een van de toetsenisten op het album. Bobby is later lid geworden van Candy's band. Ten tijde van de opnamen begon Candy bekendheid te krijgen door haar geweldige en innovatieve manier van spelen. Ik wist dat het niet lang zou duren voordat zij zou doorbreken en ik heb meer dan gelijk gekregen.
Lisa Boray is één van Holland's meest gevraagde sessie zangeressen. Ik wist dat ze een geweldige stem had omdat ik haar kende van haar disco hit "Break It Out".
Alle muzikanten op dit album geven 100% van hun kunnen, en niet in het minst mijn muzikale partner Polle Eduard. Zijn zang is altijd fris en opwindend en zijn composities zijn duidelijk aanwezig. Ik geniet van zijn gebruik van de engelse taal, hij krijgt het altijd voor elkaar om te overtuigen met zo weinig woorden. Niet slecht voor een "Dutchman"!
Alhoewel Cozy Powell op dit album nog meespeelt is hij spijtig genoeg niet meer in leven. Hij is omgekomen tijdens een tragisch verkeersongeluk. Hij vertelde mij eens dat hij echt van dit album hield en dat hij het vaak beluisterde. Met dit in gedachten willen Polle en ik deze uitgave aan hem opdragen.

Minute by minute (Ray Fenwick & Polle 'Robby' Eduard)

The friendship between Ray and Polle goes all the way back to the 1960s, when they were both playing in the Tee Set (1967), and it was this group that had brought them their first worldwide success.

In early 1987, as the Back To The Sixties reunion was getting underway, Ray and Polle decided to cut a new album. It turned out to be a blues project, named Minute By Minute. They branded it "Home-Grown Adult Pop".

Following the recording of a 12-track demo, they proceeded to record the CD, chosing only the best musicans to work on the recording; Cozy Powell was chosen for the drum parts, Jan Akkerman and Candy Dulfer collaborated on guitar and saxophone respectively, Gebrand Westveen arranged all the horn parts, Liza Boray sang a duet with Polle on "Black & Blue" and also contributed some backing vocals, Frank Papendrecht played bass and Bob Langenberg also played drums.

In april 2002 the CD is re-released by british label "Angel Air" with a new lay-out and a new title: "Long Hot Night". The original recordings are beautifully remastered and four bonus tracks are added to the CD. After thirteen years this album sounds as strong as ever and songs like "Don't Mess With Fire", "Short Avenue" and "Tijuana Holiday" are still a part of Polle's setlist.

The first demo recordings for this CD were recorded in 1987, when the band was going to be called "Blue Horizon". We later changed the name to "Minute By Minute", to avoid confusion with the Blue Horizon record label. Since the album's last release in the mid '90s the recordings have been remastered and include our original demos. The project was the brain-child of myself (Ray Fenwick) and Polle Eduard. polle and I first met in the '60s when we played together in the very succesful Dutch group, Tee Set. I was the guitarist and Polle was the bass player.
After a time we became disgruntled with our position in the group and along with keyboard player / songwriter Hans van Eijck we left and formed After Tea. We again found chart succes, but I eventually left to join the The Spencer Davis Group. Through the subsequent decades Polle and I have remained firm friends, so when we decided to record together again we really just picked up where we left off. As we had both developed as songwriters we decided that the material for the CD should totally self-penned.
Since those heady 'flower-power' days with the Tee Set and After Tea my love affair with Holland has continued to grow. I still work there ehenever I get the opportunity. When it came to selecting the musicians for the album, we chose people we had either worked with or knew about from their reputation.
My first meeting with Jan Akkerman came when we were on tour in the U.S. in the early '70s. He was playing guitar as part of Focus and I had the same job with The Spencer Davis Group. We became good friends. Jan is a suberb musician and a "great bloke". In the late '80s we were reunited when we played together as part of the Forcefield group project. Jan performed on two of the group's four albums along with drummer Cozy Powell and vocalists Graham Bonnet and Tony Martin.
My introduction to Cozy Powell came via the Deep Purple 'family tree'. At the same time as was part of the Ian Gillan Band, and he was the drummer with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Having previously worked together on the Forcefield project I asked Cozy if he would play on some Minute By Minute tracks. He agreed instantly and came to Holland for the recordings.
Candy Dulfer was recommended by Bobby van den Berg, one of the keyboard players on the album. Bobby later became part of Candy's touring band. It was at the time of these recordings that Candy was starting to gain recognition for her superb innovative playing. I knew it would not be long before she hit the 'big time' and I 'sure was' proved right!
Lisa Boray is one of Holland's busiest session singers; I knew she had a great voice having been a big fan of her '80s disco hit "Break It Out".
All the musicians on this album give "100% performances", and not least my musical partner Polle Eduard. His vocals are always fresh and exciting and his song writing skills shine through. I love his use of the English language, he always manages to convey so much with so few words. Not bad for a Dutchman!
Since these recordings were made, Cozy Powell is sadly no longer with us, having been killed tragically in a car accident. He once told me that he loved this album and often played it. With this in mind, Polle and I would like to dedicate this release to the memory of Cozy.
